Pazyryk Carpet

Acrylic on burlap 36x40 inches. Painting of an ancient carpet discovered in the Ice Maiden's Burial Mound in Siberia. Oldest hand tied carpet of the Persian type to survive approximately 2500 years old and predates any other ancient carpets by 1000 years. This carpet is a mystery because it has the combination of technique, materials ( insect dyes) and motif not commonly thought to have existed during this era. This painting has been done to scale, if I were ambitious and inspired I could paint the other three panels and have a reproduction of the entire ancient carpet. I am fascinated by the ancient Scythian culture and the artifacts that have been unearthed.

Hi Shaun
Happy New Year.
I really like this. From what you have said, I gather that you have taken the design from the carpet and painted it on burlap. It seems like quite a departure from what you have done before, but new directions are always interesting in art. I too am fascinated by old and ancient fabrics.
